The Olfactory System
Without exception the world concedes that as an instrument of search the olfactory capability of the trained
detector dog cannot be measured – let alone be equaled. Her Majesty s customs acknowledge the superiority of
the canine olfactory system over that of even the most sophisticated Ion Itemiser Technology.
The essential difference between dogs and Ion Itemisers in their respective methods of detection is that the
dog relies upon receiving gaseous elements – whilst the Ion Itemiser relies upon particles in the
atmosphere. Because gasses are more penetrating than particles, and because the olfactory sensitivity of
the dog is beyond the capacity of mass spectrometer, even the manufactures of such apparatus concede that
it is the dog that has the advantage over science.
